Aaron Rodriguez
August 2005
Aaron Rodriguez is
a second year law
student who has been
volunteering with
the VLP Advocates since
the spring
semester of his first year. Aaron
has
participated in the Child Support Project
and, this summer, has
volunteered with
the VLP to help
low-income pro se
individuals file for Chapter VII
bankruptcy.
What do you do when you are not
studying?
Lately, I think about how I really should be
studying. Besides that, I
watch HBO and swim a lot.
Who has been your favorite law school professor? Why?
Professor Ratner because I can’t think of another professor who jams “Stairway
to Heaven” and sings the entire theme song to “Gilligan’s Island”
while wearing
treky glasses and a stick through the head-head band
all to teach the concept of
partial performance to a class of 120
students.
What was your most memorable VLP experience?
A client wrote a very moving thank-you letter to the VLP staff.
The VLP managed
to
keep her children in her custody and away from an ex-husband who was
abusive with the children. She had initially tried
representing herself, but had
lost
her children as a result. The funny thing is that the VLP
felt very rewarded
despite the fact that most of the staff could barely pull together enough
change
for a few burritos for lunch later that day.
What famous person would you most like to meet?
Socrates, at least as he is portrayed by Plato. I would like
to learn more about
his
theories. Then, I would ask him if philosophizing as openly as
he did was
worth it despite the
resulting execution. Finally, I would ask him what
he thinks about some theories I feel could be true.
What has been the most important thing you have learned from
volunteering with the VLP?
I
have learned to garner more admiration for the noble few around the
world who
will continue working hard at their own expense because
they know that, at the
end of the day, a person in need will have
the help he or she deserves.
