Michael Schwartzer

December 2005

Michael Schwartzer, a 2L student at the

James E. Rogers College of Law, is the

Volunteer Lawyers Program's December

Outstanding Student Volunteer. Michael

has been active in the VLP Bankruptcy

Reaffirmation Clinic, assisting unrep-

resented clients in reaffirmation hearings.

In addition, Michael has given his extra

time to VLP as an office intern, where

he assists pro se clients filing for Chapter

7 bankruptcy. As the field of bankruptcy

law struggles to adapt to recent dramatic

changes in the law, Michael is

enthusiastically working to help our clients through these changes.

Michael is a graduate of Tulane University and a native of Las Vegas, and he

hopes to practice in his hometown after graduation.

Why did you choose to become involved in the VLP Advocates?

I got involved in the VLP because contributing to where I live has always been

important to me (no matter where I happen to live at the time).  I have always

seen law as a way to empower myself to help people.

What has been the most important thing you have learned from

volunteering with the VLP?

Client relationship---it's incredibly important to relate to the person you are trying

to help, because it helps you talk to them and get the information you need to

help them. People are usually guarded at first but if you find some type of

common ground it helps open them up.

Who has been your favorite law school professor?  Why?

Professor Korn, it's like having a law school mother--a very tough but caring law

school mother.

What has been your best vacation destination?

Caye Caulker, Belize--it’s paradise--the closest thing to Alex Garland's “The

Beach” that I've found, and trust me, I've searched.

What is your favorite restaurant in Tucson?

Zin Bistro - the once a year I can afford it.

Where are you from, originally?

Las Vegas, Nevada, but I spent the 5 and 1/2 years before law school in New

Orleans so I consider it a second home.

What do you watch on television when you should be studying?

Nip/Tuck--it’s a dirty little obsession.

What is your dream job?

Professional baseball player, like every little boy.
