Melissa Healy
December 2006
Melissa Healy is a first
year law student
who has served repeatedly
as a dedicated
volunteer in the Domestic
Relations Clinic
throughout the fall. In
addition to being
the winner of a full
tuition Perry Rogers
Scholarship at the James
A. Rogers
College of law, Melissa
is also a member
of the Women’s Law
Association, a
volunteer for Primavera
Men’s Shelter
through the National
Lawyers Guild, and
is the secretary for the
law school chapter
of the ACLU. Melissa is
responsible and
professional when dealing
with clients. She is always sensitive to the plight of
each individual and
remains compassionate when offering assistance.
Melissa is
originally from Albany, Oregon. She graduated from the University
of
Oregon summa cum
laude with a major in political science and a minor in
Spanish. She
studied abroad in Mexico, which still remains one of her favorite
destinations. If
Melissa were to choose a career outside the law she would be
an animal
rescuer. But the law won out and Melissa is enjoying the law school
experience and
says that Civil procedure is one of her favorite classes.
“Professor Atwood
delivers difficult material in a manner which is clear, concise
and easy to
understand.”
When asked about her
experience with the VLP, Melissa comments:
“I joined the VLP
to get practical experience and apply what I was learning in
books and lectures
to the real world. The clients are going through very difficult
times in their
lives, and if I can help clarify, explain paperwork or help them
through a
complicated process, then I have achieved something. I was
surprised to see
that so many private attorneys give of their time to help
indigent people.
It is very good that the private bar is so involved in pro bono
activity through
the VLP. It is also great that the students get a chance to
work with
attorneys and get practical experience through volunteering.”
