Lindsay St. John

February 2005

Lindsay is a second year law student who

has been volunteering with the VLP Advocates

since her first semester of law school in 2003.

She currently co-coordinates the VLP

Advocates Program and serves as the

student liaison for the Domestic Relations

Follow-Up Clinic and the Bankruptcy

Reaffirmation Hearings.

Even while an undergraduate student at Trinity

University in San Antonio, Texas, Lindsay

demonstrated her commitment and dedication

to vulnerable groups.  As an intern with the City

of San Antonio Department of Community Initiatives, Lindsay conducted and

compiled policy comparison research on children’s issues and prepared

community outreach programs targeted at low-income families.

After graduation from Trinity, Lindsay admits that she was drawn to attend the

James E. Rogers College of Law, in part, because of the VLP Advocates.  As a

first-year student, Lindsay became actively involved in the VLP Advocates, the

Public Interest Law Organization, and the College’s Community Service Board.

The following summer, she clerked for Southern Arizona Legal Aid, researching

landlord-tenant issues and the violation of a crime-free lease addendum by

domestic violence victimization.

During her tenure as co-coordinator, Lindsay’s take-charge attitude and

tremendous energy and drive have been vital to the success of the Advocates.  In

fact, this semester, she will be instrumental in the launch of the Guardianship

Project, a pilot program that will facilitate children’s access to safe shelter,

education, and necessary medical care.  About her service and the VLP, Lindsay

notes:

“I love the opportunity each semester to connect law students with a volunteer

opportunity that assist the community, instills a sense of the lawyers obligation

to do pro bono work, and, hopefully, is a rewarding break from sometimes

monotonous law school classes.  I think that VLP is a great opportunity for law

students to get out into the Tucson community early in their legal career and

begin making a difference.  This semester I am thrilled to participate in a pilot

program for the new Guardianship Project.  This is an area of law that is

personally interesting to me, and an opportunity to get involved in children's law

that I would not have had without VLP.  I am appreciative of the opportunity to

volunteer with and aid such an effective, worthwhile, and rewarding program.”
