Jennifer &
Brian Cosper
February 2007
The VLP is pleased to
recognize both Jennifer
and Brian Cosper as the
Outstanding Student
Volunteers for February
2007.
Jennifer and Brian began
volunteering during their
first
semester and continue to
dedicate their time to
the VLP
Advocates during spring
2007.
Jennifer is a winner of
the Law College Association Full Tuition Scholarship and
both she and Brian
participate in the Meaker Mentoring Program in addition to
volunteering with the
VLP. Both Brian and Jennifer were compassionate and
efficient volunteers for
the Domestic Relations Clinic. Always professional, they
aided clients with
document preparation and reassured many individuals
regarding the divorce
process. Each in their own right made a difference in
quite a few lives during
the course of the fall semester.
Brian and Jennifer
are both from Flagstaff, Arizona. Brian won a full scholarship
to the University
of Arizona as an undergraduate completing his studies and
graduating in
2006, Summa Cum Laude, with a degree in Accounting and
Spanish. Jennifer
also graduated from the University of Arizona in 2006, Magna
Cum Laude, with a
degree in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. They married
during the summer
and spent their honeymoon in Italy – a destination they now
both claim as
their favorite vacation spot.
When Jennifer and
Brian are not studying or volunteering they can be found at
home watching
“Lost” or “The Office” together. If you ask Jennifer, the best
restaurant in
Tucson is La Parrilla Suiza and if you ask Brian, his pick is El
Charro downtown.
They both enjoy playing with their dog Casey and when he
has the time Brian
enjoys college football and basketball. Brian’s dream job is
to follow in his
Dad’s footsteps and run his own business – perhaps open his own
firm one day.
Jennifer admits she does not really know what her dream job is at
this point, but
working with the Animal Wildlife Foundation or a similar group
sounds appealing.
When asked about
their collective law school experience so far, they both say
the faculty has
impressed them beyond their expectations. Jennifer was able to
get to know
Professor Ibrahim and Professor Korn and appreciates their
approachability.
Brian enjoyed Professor Ratner’s approach to classroom
instruction and
his passion for teaching.
When asked about their
experience with the VLP, Brian and Jennifer comment:
Brian: “I
chose to volunteer for VLP because I felt that even with my
extremely
limited legal education I could be a resource for people who simply
need help.
It’s still amazing to me just how helpless our clients feel when
faced with
substantive questions of law, and I think it’s incredibly important
to help provide
them with answers to their questions.
The most important
thing I have learned
is that each
client presents his or her own set of unique circumstances, and that
approaching each
client the same way is not an effective way to help.”
Jennifer: “I
decided to volunteer with VLP for a couple of reasons. The main
reason was because I liked the
idea of being able to help people in tough
situations and who can not
afford a lawyer. I also chose to participate in VLP
because it gave me an
opportunity to work hands on with clients and to meet
lawyers in town. I have
learned the importance of being able to effectively
communicate with
clients and to figure out what their specific concern is.”
