Jean Morrill
July 2006
Jean Morrill, a student who just
completed her first year of law school
at
the U of A has been selected by
the VLP as July’s Outstanding Law
Student Volunteer. Jean began
volunteering with the VLP’s Child
Support Project during her first
semester of law school and has
continued to do so each semester.
Jean has been particularly helpful
this summer.
“I
volunteer with the VLP to help people.
I
really like meeting with clients and feeling that I have helped
them, even if only
a
little, through a difficult time in their lives,” wrote Jean. “I
also like meeting
the volunteer lawyers and learning about their experiences and some
of the
projects they do.”
Q & A
Where are you from?
Seattle,
Washington. I grew up in a house on a hill overlooking Lake
Washington. Water everywhere.
Evergreen forests, not cactus forests,
were what I was used to. After 18
years in the rainy Northwest and 4 at
college in the Midwest (long cold
winters and humid summers), I was ready
for a change of climate. However,
the first time I drove over Gates Pass
and saw all the saguaros, I felt I
had landed on an alien planet. Now I miss
the openness and the desert colors
when I travel elsewhere.
What do you do when you should be studying?
For exercise, I
like to bicycle and maybe go to the Rec Center a couple of
times a week. I
haven't had as much time as I would like since starting
law school. I
also like to go to the Desert Museum, and occasionally I
get drafted into
helping with one of our never-ending home improvement
projects. But my
downfall is fiction. Sometimes I just really want to read
part of a novel
instead of a casebook.
What do you like most about the U of A?
I have been at the
U of A for a long time, since I came for graduate school
and worked as a
researcher before law school. I love Tucson, and can't
imagine living
anywhere else. I don't think I have anything I like "best"
about it, but some
things I like: the new bookstore (it was only a few
minutes from where
I used to work, so I could go there at lunch), the
softball team
(national champions yet again!!! Go Cats!), and Old Main
and its
surrounding vegetation.
