Zachary Derbyshire
June 2005
Zachary Derbyshire
is a second year law
student who has been volunteering with
the VLP
since his first semester
in law
school. He has been a standout volunteer
in both the Child
Support Project and the
Domestic Relations Clinic.
Zachary is
originally from England, but
came to the United States
in 1989 and
attended high school in
Kentucky. He
then attended the University of
California
at San Diego, graduating with a degree in
Biochemistry. He later earned his doctorate in
Pharmacology and Toxicology.
When Zachary is not studying or
volunteering with the VLP, he
enjoys spending
time with his pediatrician wife, Berry, playing
intramural soccer, and cheering on
his hometown Liverpool soccer
team in their division finals.
This
summer, Zachary will be interning with the Honorable David Bury in
U.S.
District Court and helping the VLP develop a landlord-tenant
clinic that will utilize
volunteer law students and attorneys to
ensure the preservation of shelter for
those threatened with
wrongful eviction from their homes.
Notes Zachary about
his involvement in the VLP:
Volunteering with
the VLP is one of the most rewarding
experiences I have had so far
in my legal education. It has
been a wonderful opportunity to
practice and appreciate the
law as it works, rather than as it
exists as mere hypotheticals
in the classroom. It also provides an
excellent area to be of
practical use to the community and to help
those who need it.
The VLP combines the need of the community for
legal advice
with the need of law students to experience the law in
action.
Ultimately, it seems like everyone benefits.
