Elizabeth Pocock
June 2010
The VLP is pleased
to announce
that Elizabeth
“Liz” Pocock has
been selected as
our Outstanding
Law Student
Volunteer for the
month of June. As
a rising 2L,
Liz has
volunteered in the VLP’s
Service Center
Clinic for the past
two semesters and
recently agreed
to become the
student coordinator
in charge of the
VLP’s Minor
Guardianship
clinic. Liz is a
woman who has the
ability to
exude a
professional aura with
ease and knows how
to treat
clients with
utmost respect
and understanding.
The recipient of the prestigious
President’s Academic Scholarship for the
California State University of Long
Beach, Liz studied Human Development
with
a minor in Anthropology which was
completed during her study abroad in
Melbourne, Australia. The Human
Development major embraces the areas of
Sociology, Psychology, Biology, and Anthropology over the course of
four
years
which explains Liz’s acute awareness of the needs of the clients who
come to
the VLP for advice and counsel.
From her time
volunteering with the VLP, Liz has learned how significant in
depth explanation
is to the clients. “As confusing as our legal system can be,
helping a client
to truly understand the steps necessary to achieve their
desired result
makes all the difference.” Liz exclaims, “It feels great when
you can see their
confidence grow from a few mere words of understandable
explanation.” It
is community involvement such as this that attracted Liz to
the James E.
Rogers College of Law in the first place.
Not only is Liz
engaged with the Tucson community, but she is also highly
active within the
U of A law school itself. As President of the Law Women’s
Association, Liz
manages the resources needed to create a web of support
and a place to
exchange ideas for the benefit of women. Liz helps organize
brown-bag
luncheons on legal issues related to women while always keeping
in mind the
mission to improve the status of women in the professional world.
Additionally, Liz
is the secretary for the International Law Society and also
participates in
the LEAD Mentoring program.
Originally from
Needles, California on the Colorado River, Liz is a devoted
volleyball player
and snowboarder. If she isn’t diving into the hot sand before
a turquoise ocean
to reach a volleyball mid-air, she is most likely traveling
around Iceland,
sailing in Long Beach, swimming in the river back home or
just playing
volleyball inside! Liz has the ambition to practice international
law one day. We
at the VLP are very honored to announce Liz as the
Outstanding
Volunteer Law Student of the month.
