Juan
Bacalski
March 2006
Juan Bacalski calls San
Diego, CA his
hometown, even though he
was born in
Albuquerque, NM. Juan
attended UC
San Diego where he
majored in animal
physiology and minored in
English
literature. After
graduation, Juan
worked in different jobs
in the biotech
field, eventually landing
a position as
a research scientist at
Novasite Phar-
maceuticals, which is
where he was
when he decided to apply
to law school.
Juan has been a volunteer
with VLP’s Guardianship Project and Child Support
Project this year. Juan
is especially valued for his ability to make clients feel at
ease, and for his
enthusiasm in volunteering with VLP.
Why did you
choose to become involved in the VLP Advocates?
I have always been a big
believer in volunteer work. I enjoy helping others and I
believe that it is
important for people to contribute their time and skills to good
causes. VLP is great
because it gives me a chance to learn about regulations
and court procedures as I
help clients navigate them. In a sense, we are learning
about the process
together. It is especially rewarding when clients are confused
or intimidated by the
process and I am able to make the experience less
stressful for them.
Sometimes I do this by being even more confused and
intimidated than they
are.
What has been
your favorite vacation destination?
A few years ago, I got to
go to Italy for a summer. I had a fantastic time in
Florence. I enjoyed the
culture, the people, and also a great Irish pub called The
Fiddler’s Knee. It’s
across the street from the train station and I highly
recommend it.
What is your
favorite restaurant in Tucson?
I have a special fondness
for Casa Molina, the original location, on Speedway
and Wilmot, because my
parents used to go there when I was very young. Also,
Casa Molina makes great
sopapillas!
What do you
watch on television when you should be studying?
I have to admit I am
addicted to CSI. I also enjoy Family Guy, probably more
than I should.
