Emma
Wells
May 2008
The VLP is proud to
announce that
the Outstanding Law
Student Volunteer
for May 2008 is Emma
Wells. Emma
is a second year student
at the U of A
College of Law, and has
been a volunteer
in the Domestic Relations
Clinic for the
past two years. She has
become
incredibly knowledgeable
in the domestic
relations area and is
able to tackle a wide
range of family law
issues, with virtually
no assistance from the
volunteer attorney.
Emma’s warm personality,
sincerity, and
attention to detail make
her a favorite of both clients and VLP staff.
Emma is originally
from Las Cruces, New Mexico. She attended a small,
private college
that focused on a classical education of mathematics, laboratory
sciences,
languages, music theory and seminar. She describes it as a “unique
experience that I
would do a hundred times over.” Since arriving at law school,
her favorite
professor has become Professor Ellen Bublick whom she describes
as “modest,
articulate, and just impressive overall. She was genuinely
interested in our
well being and always wanted to check with us on whether
or not we were
grasping the material.”
Emma says that she
loves to read but can’t quite remember if she had any
other hobbies
before she devoted her life to law school. When she does find
a little free
time, Emma is a Project Runway addict and loves to watch
marathons of
America’s Next Top Model. Her favorite Tucson restaurant is
the Guadalajara
Grill on Prince because of its fantastic salsa. A favorite
vacation
destination of hers is the tropical island of St. Martin. “I spent
about
two weeks on the
island and I can’t remember ever being more relaxed. It
wasn’t peak
tourist season and there were very few Americans. I loved it!”
Emma says that the
experiences she has had during law school and through
the VLP have
changed her view of our legal system. “It is completely different
to study the legal
system than to just make assumptions on how it works
and what is
actually involved. It’s a very eye opening experience.”
Emma says that the
most important thing she has learned from volunteering
with the VLP is:
"The most
important thing has been learning the difference
between being a
counselor and a problem-solver. Every client
is different and
has different needs. I had to learn how to adjust
my attitude with
particular clients in order to most effectually
meet their needs
or answer their questions. Some clients need
more guidance
while others want to know that you sympathize
with them. It’s a
process that I am still learning, but it’s probably
been one of the
most important.”
