Kathy Brody
November 2005
Kathy Brody, a 2L
student at the James E.
Rogers College of
Law, has been selected
as the Student
Volunteer of the Month for
November 2006. Kathy is not only a
student
volunteer in VLP clinics, but
is also one of
the Law Student Coordinators, working
closely with
VLP staff to ensure that the
clinics run smoothly. Kathy has played
an important role in the VLP’s student
clinic success
this year, helping to
coordinate the volunteer
dates of more
than 120 students--and always with a
sense
of humor.
Q:
Why did you choose to become involved in the VLP
Advocates?
A:
I wanted to get some experience with the court system, and I knew I
would
need something
to break up the constant grind of first year studying. I
refused to
be locked up
in one building for three years without giving back
to the community
around me.
As a coordinator this year, I’ve tried to
encourage other students
to get out of
the law school and help the people
of Tucson with their legal
issues.
Q:
Why do you think pro bono work is important?
A:
Lawyers help people. That’s their job, whether it’s a corporation
or a client
of Southern
Arizona Legal Aid. And the legal system is hard to navigate by
yourself,
so lawyers have the training to help people in a more specialized
way. To a
corporation, that help usually means saving some money. But
to an individual,
that help can make a big difference in the person’s life.
Although
I’ll probably
end up working for a corporate law firm after
graduation, I’ll keep
doing pro bono
work because I know I’ll be able to
help people in ways that really matter.
Q:
What do you do when you are not studying?
A:
When I’m not studying, you can usually find me socializing with
friends. I
try to keep it out
of the library, though, since it’s hard to get a drink there
and the music is
never that great.
Q:
What is your favorite restaurant in Tucson?
A:
I always tell people to check out Pastiche Modern Eatery on
Campbell,
where I used to
work as a server. The food is great, but not too expensive,
and the owners are
really committed to giving back to the community.
Also, if you sit in the bar,
you might get lucky enough to have Rick as
your server. Tell him I sent you.
Q:
What is your dream job?
A:
For as long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted to be a beach
bum. The
dream will
become a reality after I save enough money to buy my own island
in the
Caribbean or the South Pacific. My goal is to establish the first
beach-side law firm –
it shouldn’t be a problem with the technology we have
available
today. Of course,
the dress code will be casual, and the firm will
sponsor daily happy hours for
employees and clients: piňa coladas all
around.
