Dawn Aspacher

November 2006

Dawn began volunteering with the VLP Advocates

Program in 2005.  Now, in her second year of law

school her dedication to helping others has not

slowed.  In total she has participated in the Child

Support Project, Domestic Relations Clinic and

the Domestic Violence Project.  When Dawn is

not aiding those in need at a VLP clinic, she can

be found volunteering at the Justice Project and

carrying a full time law school schedule.  Dawn’s

personality is reassuring to the individuals she

assists.  When working with clients, she maintains a professional demeanor and

exhibits patience and sincerity.

Dawn has lived in Tucson since she was two years old.  She graduated from the

University of Arizona with a major in psychology and a minor in sociology. After

college, she pursued work in social services.  Dawn enjoyed a successful career

as a site director, parent educator and director of child care at Child & Family

Resources here in Tucson before deciding to attend law school.  Her background

and experience in social services lends itself well to her activities with the VLP.

Dawn loves to spend time in the White Mountains.  Her favorite spot is Greer,

Arizona.  She says, “I love Greer because it is almost a place that time forgot.

The pace is slow and relaxed and the people are friendly.  Surrounded by pine

trees and wildlife, it is a place you can walk and feel at peace.”  When it comes

to food, Dawn enjoys local spots like Red Sky Café and Buddy’s.  She is an avid

reader and would spend more time doing so if it were not for those law texts that

keep taking up her time.

When asked about her experience with the VLP, Dawn comments:

“Joining the VLP was a way to gain legal experience while also giving something

back to the community.  I have learned so much by watching the volunteer

attorneys interact with the clients.  The experience has helped me look at my

own interactions and taught me not to take things personally.  If you understand

these people are going through a difficult time and can maintain your own sense

of empathy, you can diffuse situations before they escalate.  Volunteering with

the VLP has made me realize how grateful I am for the opportunity to be in law

school and has provided me a way of paying back a little for all the gifts I have

been given.”
