Spencer Edelman
October 2007
Spencer Edelman will be a
second year law student at the
U of A this autumn. He
was an outstanding volunteer during
the summer of 2007.
Spencer participated in the Bankruptcy
Clinic this past summer
and has continued volunteering for
the Bankruptcy Clinic
during the fall semester. He is
extremely professional
and kind to all of his clients, and he does a great job
explaining the
reaffirmation process to them. He is a real asset to the VLP
program.
Spencer was born
in Dayton, Ohio. Although his family left Ohio when Spencer
was two years old
to come to Pinetop-Lakeside, AZ, Spencer has remained an
ardent Cincinnati
Reds fan. He graduated cum laude from Macalester College
in St. Paul, MN
with a B.A. in history with minors in both mathematics and
classics. While
at Macalester College, Spencer was a concert and event
organizer,
handling the planning of an annual $40,000 concert event
extravaganza. He
also plays a pretty mean game of tennis; he was captain
of Macalester’s
men’s varsity tennis team for two years.
Spencer states that he chose to volunteer for the VLP Bankruptcy
Clinic
because of the opportunity to
work with and impact the lives of clients and
gain experience speaking in
front of a judge. His experiences as a law student
volunteer have been
eye-opening. “The tremendous impact the law can have
on
people’s lives when applied properly is remarkable. It is both a
fantastic
feeling and something of a curse to have friends asking for your
opinion on
the
most sensitive parts of their lives.”
Given some time
off, and something other than a poor law student’s budget,
you might find
Spencer heading south to Hilton Head, South Carolina. Spencer
really enjoys
traveling, but feels that “the hospitality you receive in the South
is
unmatched.” He
loves the white, sandy beaches and the multitudes of tennis
courts found on
this beautiful resort island. Back home in Tucson, Spencer’s
favorite
restaurant is Zemam’s Ethiopian Cuisine.
When asked about his
experience with the VLP, Spencer comments:
“I am extremely thankful for the wonderful people I have worked with
at
VLP. From
coordinator Jean West, to my co-volunteer Shane Ham, and
of course
the fantastic lawyers and judges we’ve worked with, I’ve learned
just how
much my fellow classmates and the legal community in Tucson
take
seriously their responsibilities as lawyers to the public. I’ve
appre-
ciated all
the advice I’ve received from Judges Marlar and Hollowell and
all the
attorneys we’ve worked with and learned about their passion not
only for the law, but for educating law students and incorporating
them
into
Tucson’s legal community.”
