Shannon
Giles
January
2006
By Stacy Rupprecht
Butler
Shannon Giles has
been selected as the
Outstanding Pro Bono Attorney of the Month
for
January. Shannon has been a VLP
volunteer since 2003. She accepts
cases
for direct representation in the areas of
contract and real
property. She recently
completed a real property case that she
worked
on for a little more than two
years. Shannon dedicated 208 hours to the case
and achieved a great
result for the family. The VLP's monthly award is a distinct
honor:
of the 1100 attorneys who volunteer their time with VLP, only 12
receive
the VLP's Outstanding Pro Bono Attorney award each year.
Q&A with Shannon
Giles:
Where are you
from?
Edmonton, Alberta,
Canada.
Where did you go
to law school?
I attended college
and law school at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. I
received
my law degree in 1996 and immediately moved to Arizona. I then
attended the University of Arizona and received a masters degree in
international
trade law in 1997.
What brought you
to Tucson?
I never again want
to live where I have to shovel snow.
What drives you to
volunteer with VLP?
My practice is
primarily focused on commercial litigation and I generally work
with
clients who are not complete strangers to litigation and who are
making
business decisions with respect to litigation. Whenever I
volunteer for VLP,
however, I am struck by how overwhelming, and
potentially devastating, our
legal process can be for the average
individual. This is especially true for
individuals without the
resources to hire an attorney. This reality drives me
to volunteer
with VLP.
Anyone you would
like to acknowledge for contributing to your legal career/ pro bono
service?
I consider myself
fortunate to work with a group of attorneys that considers
volunteer
legal services to be a priority.
