Bill Bacon
January 2009
The Attorney of
the Month for January is Bill Bacon. Mr.
Bacon was selected
to receive this award for his long time
service to VLP
clients and for his recent work on a contract
matter referred to
him by the program. The VLP client purchased a used vehicle
from a
local car dealer. The car developed mechanical problems that could
not
be repaired and
was eventually towed back to the seller's lot. The seller then
leased the client
a vehicle and the client accumulated $400.00 in rental fees
before returning
the rental car, leaving her without a vehicle. After the case
was referred to
him, Bill filed a rescission action which resulted in rescission
of the motor
vehicle rental installment sales contract and a judgment against
the seller and
finance company. Bill dedicated 136.5 hours to the matter.
The VLP's monthly
award is a distinct honor: of the 1240 attorneys who
volunteer their
time with VLP, only 12 receive the VLP's Outstanding Pro Bono
Attorney award
each year.
Q&A with Bill Bacon:
Where are you from?
I grew up in
Boston .
Where did you attend school?
I attended Amherst
College and Suffolk University Law School .
What is the history of your practice of law?
I joined VISTA and
was assigned to Southern Arizona Legal Aid in 1976. I stayed
on as a staff
attorney doing administrative law for 10 years. VLP lawyers John
Balentine, Leslie
Nixon and now Federal Magistrate (Yikes!!) Chuck Pyle were
my mentors (and
frequent drinking buddies) at SALA. Leslie was my favorite
boss as she
introduced me to her sister, Lynne. Lynne and I have been married
29 years.
What drives you to volunteer for VLP?
The years at SALA
are my motivation for participating in the VLP program.
Although the need
always exceeds the SALA/VLP resources, it’s very rewarding
to be able to help
now and then. The Advice Only Clinic is also a reality check.
If you think
things are tough in your life, a few hours at the Clinic will put
your
problems in
perspective.
Are you a dog or a cat person?
I’m dog person.
We’ve had a few dogs over the years; the most recent being a
rescue dog who
enthusiastically ate most of our couch. I suspect a set-up as
Lynne confessed
she never liked the couch. I hope she likes the rest of the
furniture because
the dog has a lot of energy.
What is your favorite restaurant?
Pastiche
