Heather Strickland
July 2006
The Volunteer Lawyers Program has
selected Heather Strickland as this
month’s Outstanding Pro Bono Attorney.
Heather began her work with the VLP as
a
law student, participating in all of the
VLP clinics and dedicating the summer
and fall of 2003 to assisting clients in
need of Chapter 7 bankruptcy. As an
attorney, Heather’s involvement in the
VLP has included direct representation
of
clients in domestic relations cases
and participation in the VLP’s Domestic
Relations Clinics and Child Support Project.
Through the Child Support Project, which takes place daily at
Superior Court,
Heather supervises law students as they meet with unrepresented
litigants prior
to
their final divorce hearings to ensure that children receive their
legally entitled
child support and have access to safe shelter, education and medical
care. The
students prepare new and accurate documents if the child support
amount is
incorrect.
The VLP’s monthly award is a distinct honor: of the 1200 attorneys
who
volunteer their time with VLP, only 12 receive the VLP’s Outstanding
Pro Bono
Attorney award each year.
The award will be presented to Heather Strickland at the Annual VLP
Awards
celebration this fall. The event will be held at the Fox Theatre.
