Skip Skinner
June 2007
The Outstanding
Pro Bono Attorney
of the Month for
June is Skip Skinner.
A member of
Southern Arizona Legal
Aid's (SALA)
Volunteer Lawyers
Program (VLP) for
two years, Skip is
a frequent
participant in the VLP’s
Advice Only
Clinic. In the clinic,
Skip meets with
pre-scheduled
clients to
determine the legal merits
of their cases,
provide advice and
determine the next
course of action.
Skip also
participates in the VLP’s
Minor Guardianship
Clinic.
Additionally, he
accepts cases
for direct
representation in the areas of guardianship and debt collection.
Although Skip has
been a member of the VLP for a relatively short time, he has
made an enormous
impact on the program, already assisting two hundred and
nine clients with
their legal needs. The VLP’s monthly award is a distinct honor:
of the 1220
attorneys who volunteer their time with VLP, only 12 receive the
VLP’s Outstanding
Pro Bono Attorney award each year.
Q& A with Skip
Skinner:
What is something
that people might not know about you?
I flew the A-10
Warthog when I was in the Air Force. I attended the U of A Law
School after I
retired from the Air Force.
What is the nature
of your current legal practice?
All my law
practice is volunteer, both with the VLP and with KARE (Kinship and
Adoption Resource
& Education Center).
What drives you to
volunteer with VLP?
I enjoy my
volunteer work because the people I assist never take my help for
granted.
Anyone you’d like
to give a shout-out to?
I'd like to
acknowledge Charlie Flett, another great VLP volunteer. Charlie and
I
alternate doing a
weekly Title XIV Guardianship Clinic for KARE.
What’s your
favorite Tucson restaurant?
My favorite
restaurant is Rosa's, clearly the best Mexican restaurant in Tucson.
What do you do
when you aren’t practicing law?
I enjoy playing
the guitar, mostly blues and classical--30 years of practice and
I'm still not
ready for the stage!
