» Pima County Outstanding Attorney of the Month

Dan Montgomery

June 2008

By Stacy Rupprecht Butler

The Attorney of the Month for June is

Dan Montgomery.  Southern Arizona

Legal Aid’s Volunteer Lawyers Program

(VLP) selected Mr. Montgomery to

receive this honor for his long time service

to the program.  A member of the VLP

since 1985, Mr. Montgomery has

consistently assisted clients with real

property and housing issues.  Recently,

Mr. Montgomery agreed to assist a VLP

client from Cochise County with a

landlord/tenant matter.  Not only did Mr.

Montgomery travel to Cochise County to represent the client, but when he

discovered that the client did not have transportation, Mr. Montgomery picked

the client up at his home and drove him to and from the courthouse. The case

was resolved through mediation to the satisfaction of the client.

Q&A with Dan Montgomery:

Where are you from?

Tucson, Arizona.  I’ve resided in Tucson my whole life.

Where did you attend law school?

U of A and U of A Law School.

What is the history of your practice of law?

I started practice in 1977 with Soble, Cole &Mechan, and have been a sole

practitioner since 1982. I primarily work in criminal defense and personal injury.

What drives you to volunteer with VLP?

I believe that all attorneys have an obligation to assist those in need.

Favorite restaurant?

Enotecca Pizzaria Wine Bar.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

Fishing and spending time in Rocky Point, Mexico.

What do you like best about practicing in Tucson?

The best part of practicing in Tucson, "it is not in Phoenix." Unfortunately,

Tucson is rapidly growing and becoming more like Phoenix.

What would you do if you weren’t practicing law?

Retire and become a deck hand.

The VLP’s monthly award is a distinct honor: of the 1,220 attorneys who

volunteer their time with VLP, only 12 receive the VLP’s Outstanding Pro

Bono Attorney award each year.  To find out how you can become involved in

the VLP, check out the program’s website at www.VLPArizona.org or call

Michele Mirto, VLP Program Director at 623-9465, extension 4171.
