» Pima County Outstanding Attorney of the Month

Jim Jutry

November 2007

By Stacy Rupprecht Butler

Jim Jutry has been selected as

the Outstanding Pro Bono Attorney

of the Month for November.  Jim

began to volunteer with the VLP

in 1986.  Since that time he has

helped many non-profit organizations

incorporate and obtain their tax-

exempt status. Recently, Jim

completed work on a matter for

a local organization that promotes independent living and provides a variety of

services to people with disabilities.  Jim dedicated 52 hours to the case.  The

VLP’s monthly award is a distinct honor: of the 1220 attorneys who volunteer

their time with VLP, only 12 receive the VLP’s Outstanding Pro Bono Attorney

award each year.

Q&A with Jim Jutry:

How long have you lived in Tucson?

I am a native Tucsonan which means I’ve been in Tucson for over 50 years.

Where did you go to College/Law School?

I have undergraduate and masters degrees in Accounting from the University of

Arizona.  My JD is from the University of Arizona and I have an LLM (Taxation)

from the University of Florida.

What is the history of your practice of law?

I started as a law clerk with the DeConcini law firm in 1978 and I am still here.

What drives you to volunteer with VLP?

Our firm has always encouraged and valued VLP representation and other civic

and community service.  I think we honestly want Tucson to be a great place to

live and we recognize that we can help with a little volunteer work.

Other VLP volunteers you’d like to give a shout out to?

VLP representation really is a firm-wide undertaking.  Most of my VLP referrals

involve forming nonprofit organizations and qualifying those organizations for tax

exemption.  One of our certified paralegals, Robin Barnes, also does a lot of

work in these areas.  In one particular VLP matter Robin spent about 150

hours over a three year period.  She convinced the IRS the organization

should qualify as tax exempt.  So, she did all the work and I basically claimed

all the credit.

Are you a dog or cat person?

I am really just an animal person.  At one point in the not too distant past, I

had three dogs, three cats, three horses, an Amazon parrot and a desert

tortoise.  The menagerie is now a little smaller.
