The Road Ahead:  Pro Bono Attorneys Recognized

at 2007 VLP Luncheon

By Stacy Rupprecht Butler

The Volunteer Lawyers

Program held its Annual Awards

Luncheon at the University

Marriott on November 28.

The luncheon is an annual event

celebrating the attorneys,

legal staff, law students and

others who volunteer with and support the Volunteer Lawyers Program.

Now in its 26th year, the Volunteer Lawyers Program’s mission is to foster hope,

self-sufficiency and equal access to the justice system by matching volunteer

lawyers with low-income Arizonans who have nowhere else to turn.  Currently,

over 1,100 attorneys and law students volunteer with the VLP.  In appreciation of

their efforts, VLP incorporates many special and traditional elements to its

annual lunch:  a mariachi band fills the banquet hall with lively music, unique

party favors and raffle tickets await the guests at their seats, and a special power

point presentation reminds the volunteers of just how much their efforts have

accomplished.  Local attorney and stand-up comedian Elliot Glicksman (pictured

above right with Anthony Young, SALA’s Executive Director, Dee-Dee Samet,

PCBA President, and Justice Andrew Hurwitz) MC’s the event, keeping the

guests entertained during their meal and the awards presentation.

This year's awards were presented by Arizona Supreme Court Justice Andrew

Hurwitz.  Those attorneys who received the Attorney of the Month award in 2007

were recognized: Dennis Clancy (January); Elliot Glicksman (February); Heather

Gaines (March); Jim Sakrison (April); Patrick Farrell (May); Skip Skinner (June);

Jennifer Rebholz (July); Kate McMillan (August); Merle Turchik (September); Jim

Marvel (October); Jim Jutry (November) and Jon Iurino (December).

In addition, the VLP extended special

  awards individuals, law firms and

  organizations who made extraordinary

contributions to the VLP in 2007: Collin

  Wedel (Undergraduate Student); Jean

  West (Law Student); Susie Rogers

  (Translation Services); Tina Streight

  (Millie Crawford Legal Assistant); Linda

Huffman (Award of Appreciation); Susie Salmon (New Attorney of the Year);

Scott McDonald (Public Attorney of the Year); Alan Solot (Consumer/Bankruptcy

Attorney); Lisa Schriner Lewis (Family Law Attorney);  Cheryl Copperstone

(Lifesaver); Joubert Davenport (Lifesaver); Luis Ochoa (Distinguished Service

Award); Dean Christoffel (Attorney of the Year, pictured above left with Justice

Hurwitz) and DeConcini McDonald Yetwin & Lacy, PC (Firm of the Year).

The annual luncheon has become a beloved tradition to the Tucson legal

community – a chance to share a few laughs with friends in the profession,

admire the efforts of some truly remarkable volunteers and celebrate the

commitment of this legal community to the VLP’s important work.
