Giles Receives Pro Bono Award
by Michele Mirto

Southern Arizona Legal Aid’s monthly award is a distinct honor: of the nearly 1000 attorneys who volunteer their time with SALA each year, only 12 receive the Outstanding Pro Bono Attorney award each year.

Shannon Giles, of Awerkamp & Bonilla, was selected to receive Southern Arizona Legal Aid’s Outstanding Pro Bono Attorney of the Month Award for November 2016.  Shannon joined SALA’s Volunteer Lawyers Program in 2003.  She provides direct representation to clients in employment law matters.  Shannon is also a frequent participant in the VLP’s employment law clinic.  In all, Shannon has assisted 65 clients; providing 578 hours of service to those most in need.
Q & A with Shannon Giles:

Where are you from?
Originally from Edmonton, Alberta, but I’ve been in Tucson for 20 years.

What is the history of your practice of law?
I practiced general business litigation for many years at a large law firm before opening my own practice.  I joined Awerkamp & Bonilla in 2012.

What are your current practice areas?
We practice employment law, primarily on behalf of employees, including federal employees.

What drives you to volunteer with VLP?
There are so many people in our community that just need a little help.  It’s very rewarding to be able to help people, or even just clarify some things about legal processes for them.

Anyone you would like to acknowledge for contributing to your legal career / pro bono service?  I am very glad that Awerkamp & Bonilla readily supports this work.

Things you do when not working or volunteering your legal services?
My daughter swims competitively year-round, so we spend a lot of time at the pool.  I also lead a Junior Girl Scout troop.
